029 – Business Page for Neworld Part 2!

Posted on: April 17th, 2012 by Neworld Coaching No Comments

This week… we began at the very beginning and flipped the switch to create the NEW Neworld Coaching Facebook Page!  We started by working in Michael’s profile and attached myself as an admin after it was set up…

After we clicked the “Create a Page” button, we had to choose between 6 types of Pages to create.  When Michael did his original Page he represented himself as a Public Figure, but THIS Page is all about Neworld as a company, so we naturally chose the “Company” option.  The other options included “Local Business”, “Brand”, “Cause” or “Entertainment”.  We then chose a category for our Company, agreed to the terms and we were off to the races!

The next step was to upload a profile picture.  This is the little square pic that will appear on the newsfeed of our followers and represent us the most!  It is also one of the first things that people see when they go to our Page because it is in the bottom left corner of the cover.

We chose the Neworld Compass for this picture.  I thought it was the best use of Neworld Branding and there is little chance that we would feel the need to change it.  It will not age or go out of style and the compass has been the one constant in our branding since the beginning!  Then we added a bit of info about Neworld… “Liked” the page and skipped the prompt to invite friends or email contacts to “Like” us for now.  We wanted to look a bit more professional before that!

The next thing we chose to tackle was the Cover.  I tried to use the several programs that have been suggested here in the WFU, but nothing was appropriate for us.  Finally I decided to contact the professionals and Chris Steingart from QT Web Designs did up a cover photo for us that perfectly represents the Neworld Brand!  Thanks Chris!  We were also prompted to give our Page a name that can be represented in the web address.  www.facebook.com/NeworldCoaching was suggested and that seemed like the best choice possible. Easy!

On to the updates…

The use of Status Updates will be a key feature in the promotion of our Page and the conversion of people over to the Neworld in general.  We uploaded the feed from the new Page into Hootsuite and scheduled a few Hoots for the week!  The Hoots included promotions of Neworld’s FREE Stuff and a few relationship builder posts…

PLUS a contest for the first 100 “Likes”!  The first 100 names will be entered into a draw to win a FREE Pass to Neworld’s upcoming “Blog Like a Pro” webinar series tin May!  Registration for this series will open April 23rd!  We will see how long it takes for us to reach that goal.  Hopefully not too long at all!

I invited all of MY friends to LIKE our Page and few of Michael’s too.  The next step for us will be to invite the rest of Michael’s friends to LIKE us and promote the contest even more!

Here are some interesting points to mention…

  • Michael’s profile already had a Page (that contained NO info) attached to his “info” when he filled “Neworld Coaching” into his personal profile.  I had to delete that page and reattach the new page to his personal profile.
  • As an admin… you represent the brand and speak as a company… not as an individual!
  • The more LIKES you get… the more access you are given to special Page abilities!

Stay tuned for Part 3 of www.facebook.com/NeworldCoaching !

Practice Mindfulness

Posted on: April 12th, 2012 by Neworld Coaching No Comments

Have you ever driven somewhere, or been a passenger, and when you got to your destination, had no recollection of the trip? Many of us spend our days on “automatic pilot”, going from one situation or destination to the next and at the end of the day, wonder where the time went. Or, spend our days stressed about all the things we need to do and all the hours it will take to do them.

Jon Kabat-Zinn (author of Full Catastrophe Living along with other books and meditation CD’s) defines “mindfulness” as paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgementally. In other words, living in the present moment, being fully aware of your thoughts, feelings and actions every wakeful moment.

How will this help reduce your stress? You will become aware that the feelings you experience are always changing – you may react one way to an experience, and tomorrow react a different way and feel different toward the same experience. You may be sad now and laughing ten minutes from now. You may be worried now, and excited tomorrow.

You might see self-defeating patterns that you did not notice before and make positive changes in your behaviour. You may become aware of what triggers unwanted behaviour patterns.

If you focus on one particular task at a time, you can put all your energy into that task and it will be completed faster and better with more understanding and enjoyment than if you try to do two or three or four things at once.

Imagine: knowing you have to exercise, it’s winter and it’s cold out, you get dressed and hurry out and while you are walking you are thinking of what you have to do when you get home and all the things that have been stressing you out and what you are going to have to do tomorrow and next month and then you look at your watch and think, shoot, I have to hurry up and so you turn around and get home, tired and upset because you just “lost” thirty minutes and don’t know if you’ll have time to do everything……

Now, imagine: You look out at the sunshine and get dressed in clothes that will keep you warm. You go out on this crisp winter day, feeling the softness and warmth of your socks on your feet and the lining in your boots, smelling the wood smoke from chimneys, hearing the crunch of the snow under your feet, seeing the blue sky with its fluffy white clouds, noticing the winter birds flying through the trees, feeling the cold air on your cheeks. When stressful thoughts try to interrupt your walk, you let them go, and return to noticing where you are walking and the sights and sounds that surround you. When you arrive home, you are invigorated and energized and ready to focus on the next thing on your list.

I know which I prefer. I also know that when I take the time to enjoy whatever it is I am doing without adding the “hurry up and get it done” message, I am much less stressed, whether it’s working on Stress Busters or doing a workout at the gym or eating supper.

The idea is that if you can discipline yourself to practice mindfulness during the day, from the moment you awake to the sensations around you, during the time you take to enjoy nutritious meals, and the time you take to giving one hundred per cent of your focus to your work, to your play and your relationships, you will find an increased ability to cope with everyday stressors that come your way.

Any time you spend in the practice of mindfulness during the day will bring a positive change in your life.

028 – Looking Before Leaping?

Posted on: April 10th, 2012 by Neworld Coaching No Comments

For more than 3 years… Neworld has rolled with the Facebook punches and taken great strides in formulating productive strategies to promote our endeavors.  In the beginning we used Groups to spread the word by frequently “messaging all members” and sending our promotions directly to their Facebook inbox.  This worked extremely well until Facebook come out with the New Group format last year.  At this point success with Groups depends on the interactivity of others and whether or not their permissions are set to receive your messages!  Not too promising…

We also branded Michael as a Public Figure and created a page, but didn’t find it to be overly productive.  It seemed the extremely well known larger companies and Public Figures (Revlon, Cineplex Odeon, and Oprah Winfrey etc) could find success because followers were drawn to look at their pages and see their notifications.  Without a sure fire method of messaging all followers we found it extremely difficult to promote Neworld and we could find NO ONE who could attribute direct success from the use of their Page etc.

Then the News Feed changed everything… and Timeline wrapped a ribbon around the entire experience with a pretty bow!

I have always said that we should look before leaping when it comes to making Social Networking decisions, but it seems obvious that Facebook had made some decisions that are here to stay and it is high time that Neworld leap into the world of Business Pages and create our own Neworld Way of Success within them.  Pages seem so much more user friendly now.  With the great popularity of the News Feed, our Page messages will be seen by our followers and hopefully… they will be much more interested in commenting and liking our posts!

First Step: Read a few articles and follow a few blogs about Facebook Page success.  Here are a few that I will be reading this week:

Second Step: Activate the Neworld Coaching Business Page… finally!

P.S.  Remember… there are 4 reasons why we procrastinate…

  • We think that it is too hard
  • We think it will take too long
  • We do not already have the knowledge to do it
  • We fear the process (failure, ridicule, time commitment)

What are you procrastinating about?

“By setting weekly goals with Dawn, I have accomplished great things.  Despite the challenges of daily life and having too much on my plate at times, my business is moving forward in a positive direction.

As Henriette Anne Klauser says “Write It Down, Make It Happen”.  It’s amazing what happens when you follow that advice.  Dawn holds me accountable.  With her assistance, my new website was officially launched on January 1 and my first newsletter was sent out in early February.  I’ve received great feedback on both my website and newsletter.

It’s nice to know I’ve got someone in my corner to help with my business concerns.”

Resistance is Futile

Posted on: April 2nd, 2012 by Neworld Coaching No Comments

“It is not the strongest of the species
that survives, nor the most intelligent,
but the one most responsive to change.”
~ Charles Darwin

I read a study recently that ranked “resistance to change” as # 4 in a list of the most common career-limiting habits.  Not surprising, since human beings will naturally gravitate towards activities that produce perceived happiness and steer as far away as possible of actions that offer risk of failure and possible negativity.

Being an “Entrepreneur fo Today” we must to be more adaptable to change than ever before.  Technology alone will challenge us to learn new things and adapt almost on a daily basis!  Change is absolutely unavoidable and successful people recognize this fact and learn how to play the “Change Game”.  Resistance IS futile.

Here are a few tips to help you to embrace change:

Keep the glass 1/2 full and follow the opportunity…

Changes will pop up that you will need to adapt to quickly.  Train yourself to find the “potential” in it as soon as possible and work towards the opportunity that the potential offers!

Get over the FEAR?…

Ask yourself WHY you are resisting.  Procrastination occurs for 4 reasons…

  • We think that it is too hard
  • We think it will take too long
  • We do not already have the knowledge to do it
  • We fear the process (failure, ridicule, time commitment)

Make it a No-Drama Zone…

When you see change on the horizon, be proactive about it.  Gather all the information you require and “keep calm and carry on”.  If you allow yourself to appear frazzled you will not only diminish your own confidence,  but you will also reflect this energy to your clients, associates and staff.

“Choose” to accept that change can be a good thing…

Let go of the feelings you have associated with the “old way” of doing things. While some strategies are tried and true… change WILL find a way… and when it does, bringing emotional attachment into the fray can spell disaster.  Comfort does not equal rationality.

Change is most often a difficult thing.  The sooner we learn to embrace it and work within it, the easier it will be to begin the next challenge that comes along.  As I said in the beginning, we naturally gravitate toward the things that make us feel fulfilled, safe and happy. Therefore as we embrace change more often and see the good in it… the more we will gravitate toward it with enthusiasm!

027 – Timeline… Another Opinion!

Posted on: April 2nd, 2012 by Neworld Coaching 1 Comment

Last September, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook would be undergoing a major facelift. The current profile page, that we were seeing as the “Wall,” would be replaced by a new feature called Timeline. As we saw with the new format for groups introduced in 2011, eventually everyone’s profile will be converted to this new format.

As a self-proclaimed sceptic of anything new in the realm of social media, I wasn’t loving this change and I tried my best to avoid the changeover for as long as possible. In my mind, I imagined some time-intensive task requiring a vast amount of technical knowledge to complete. The one thing that propelled me toward updating my profile now was the fact that whether I did it or not, Facebook would do it for me at some point in time without any forewarning.

So, I set off on what I thought would be a challenging adventure, only to find that it wasn’t so difficult after all! As a result of that experience, I’d like to share a few of the most important things I’ve learned about Facebook Timeline…from the point of view of a not-so savvy Facebook user.

Getting started really IS as easy as clicking on the green box that says GET TIMELINE NOW. You can either do this by visiting a friend’s Timeline profile OR you can go to facebook.com/about/timeline and click the box at the bottom to begin changing over your profile.

Once you begin the process, you’ll have seven days to review, update and tweak your profile before it goes live. If you’re satisfied with the product before the seven days is up, you can go LIVE at any time. After the week is up, the profile will be updated automatically.

The best feature of the new Timeline, in my opinion, is the new cover photo. That’s the huge banner that appears across the top of your profile. It’s really important to choose a good high-resolution photo that looks good as a wide image, and be sure to resize to properly so that it is well-proportioned. This is the part of your profile that EVERYONE sees, no matter what privacy settings you’ve chosen. If you’re not comfortable with setting up your own cover photo, check out the new sites that offer free covers, like myfbcover.com or firstcovers.com. It’s really quite easy to change these up regularly to correspond with holidays or events, or just whenever you feel like changing it.

Take the time to weed out your old profile before you start. Be sure to delete embarrassing or outdated photos and tags and add new photos that you’ve been meaning to upload. Pay attention to your info space, including your past jobs and education and go through your LIKE and ABOUT sections with a fine-toothed comb so that your profile will display as both up-to-date and professional.

Be SURE to change your privacy settings before you start updating (I got caught on this one), or else EVERYONE will see every single update that you make, including your new likes, every place that you add to the new MAP feature and every change to your  ABOUT page. You can do this by clicking on the arrow beside the home button, accessing your privacy settings, clicking the CUSTOM icon and setting the default to ONLY ME. I wish I had know this before I started! Don’t forget to change it back once you’ve finished with your profile.

There’s really no reason NOT to go ahead and update your profile now, before Facebook does it for you. True, once you start, you can’t return to you’re the old version of your profile. It’s better to be proactive, though, and take the time to be sure that people will see your profile in exactly the way that you want to be seen.

What Promotional Product Is Right For You?

Posted on: March 27th, 2012 by Neworld Coaching No Comments

What promotional product is right for you?

as posted on the RPM Blog recently

With almost ¾ million promotional products to choose from, which one will work best for your business? Wouldn’t it be great if there was a single item we could recommend?

Well, there’s not. But here are a few tips to help narrow down the choices.

  1.     Determine exactly who will be receiving the item, and why!
  2. Where will the recipient be at the time they would be in most dire need of your products or services.
  3. How can you keep your name in front of them at the time when they would be in most dire need of your products and services?

This is not as difficult as it sounds. Plus everyone’s answer will be different, but here’s a great scenario to help you…

Suppose we are an electrician, and we want people to think about us first when an electricians services are required.

First we need to determine who we are targeting. Obviously, people who are having electrical issues that need to be resolved. But we need to narrow that down a bit to know exactly who we want to be in front of. People whose power has gone out, or are renovating and need wiring done, or a breaker keeps popping, or other electrical issues that arise.

Second, where will the recipient most likely be when they realize their level of electrical expertise is minimal at best, and they need to have a professional? While we cannot say for sure, we can make some pretty accurate assumptions.

Speaking from experience, when something electrical comes up, I head for the fuse / breaker box. After several minutes of trying to analyze the problem unsuccessfully, that is the most likely time to think “we need an electrician”. Wouldn’t it be nice if our company name, logo and emergency phone number was staring right back at them?

Third – That being said, how do we do that? What could we provide to our amateur electricians that would display our logo and contact information at the time when they would most desperately need us, and save them from flipping through a directory and calling a competitor?

Usually when the power goes out, it’s dark. Even in the daytime, the fuse box is in a dark area of the house. How about a glow in the dark sticker or magnet on the fuse box that says “In the dark? Call Ed the Electrician”. Or perhaps one of those rechargeable lights that are plugged into an outlet, and turn on automatically when there’s a power outage?

You get the idea. Ask yourself these questions as it relates to your business. It will help narrow down effective, targeted, and useful promotional ideas that will make you memorable!

026 – NEVER Share This Information…

Posted on: March 26th, 2012 by Neworld Coaching No Comments

As posted recently in the official Facebook Blog:

Facebook is mounting a strong resistance against the trend of employers and others forcing users of the social networks to surrender their passwords.

Facebook Chief Privacy Officer Erin Egan issued a strongly worded statement condemning the attack on passwords:

“In recent months, we’ve seen a distressing increase in reports of employers or others seeking to gain inappropriate access to people’s Facebook profiles or private information.

This practice undermines the privacy expectations and the security of both the user and the user’s friends. It also potentially exposes the employer who seeks this access to unanticipated legal liability.

The most alarming of these practices is the reported incidences of employers asking prospective or actual employees to reveal their passwords.

If you are a Facebook user, you should never have to share your password, let anyone access your account, or do anything that might jeopardize the security of your account or violate the privacy of your friends. We have worked really hard at Facebook to give you the tools to control who sees your information.

As a user, you shouldn’t be forced to share your private information and communications just to get a job. And as the friend of a user, you shouldn’t have to worry that your private information or communications will be revealed to someone you don’t know and didn’t intend to share with just because that user is looking for a job. That’s why we’ve made it a violation of Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities to share or solicit a Facebook password.

Facebook takes your privacy seriously. We’ll take action to protect the privacy and security of our users, whether by engaging policymakers or, where appropriate, by initiating legal action, including by shutting down applications that abuse their privileges.
While we will continue to do our part, it is important that everyone on Facebook understands that they have a right to keep their password to themselves, and we will do our best to protect that right.”

hmmm… who would actually give up their password to a prospective employer?  Duh?

Keyboard Shortcuts

Posted on: March 22nd, 2012 by Neworld Coaching No Comments

Keyboard Shortcuts

According to Wikipedia…

Keyboard shortcuts are typically an alternate means for invoking one or more commands that would otherwise be accessible only through a menu, a pointing device, different levels of a user interface, or via a command console. Keyboard shortcuts generally expedite common operations by reducing input sequences to a few keystrokes, hence the term “shortcut”.

Some keyboard shortcuts require the user to press a single key or a sequence of keys one after the other. Other keyboard shortcuts require pressing and holding several keys simultaneously.

I have found an amazing resource for accessing various kinds of Keyboard Shortcuts for Microsoft Products.

Just Click Here to access the webpage.

It provides shortcuts specific for things like Windows 7, Windows XP and Windows Vista.  Internet Explorer 6, 7, 8, 9 too.

The best information comes in the Office (2003, 2007 & 2010) sections that offers shortcuts for Word, Power Point, Outlook as well as Excel!

Awesome!
